What a strand *can* do is sit in a bad spot - in a gutter, across a valley, or right in the drainage path at the eave - and make an existing ice dam problem harder to manage. That is an installation-quality issue, not a lighting issue, and it is entirely avoidable.

What actually causes an ice dam?

The mechanism is heat, and it happens in this order:

3. **Snow on the warm section melts** and the water runs down toward the eave.

So why do people connect the two?

Two reasons, and both are worth understanding.

**Timing.** Lights go up in November. Ice dams appear in January. Anything on the roof when the ice shows up gets blamed for the ice. That is correlation, not cause.

**Bad installs genuinely do make ice dams worse to live with.** This is the legitimate half of the concern. A run that has been dropped into the gutter, laid across a roof valley, or stapled through the drip edge can obstruct drainage or create a place for ice to grab. It did not cause the dam - the attic did - but it made the water's exit path worse, and in a bad year that matters.

What should a professional install do differently in Minnesota?

Ask any installer these questions. A good one will have immediate answers.

**Route runs clear of drainage paths.** Nothing sits in the gutter. Nothing crosses a valley where snowmelt concentrates and channels. Runs follow the roof edge and the fascia line, not the water's path.

**Clip, never staple or nail.** Staples and nails put holes in shingles, fascia, and drip edge. Holes in a roof surface that is about to spend three months under freeze-thaw cycles are a genuinely bad idea, and no ice dam has to be involved for that to become a leak. Clip attachment puts zero holes in anything.

**Keep the gutters usable.** A gutter that cannot drain is the front line of an ice dam. If a light run is occupying it, that is a bad install.

**Look at the roof honestly before quoting.** If someone walks your roof and says nothing about the eaves, the valleys, or existing ice damage, they were not really looking. If there is already staining, damaged shingles at the eave, or evidence of past dams, you should hear about it on the walkthrough - including if the honest recommendation is to deal with the attic before adding anything to the roof.

**Talk about attachment on your specific roof.** Slate, cedar, metal, and older shingle all behave differently. A one-system-fits-everything answer is a warning sign.

Does permanent LED lighting change the ice dam picture?

**Permanent lighting is generally gentler on a Minnesota roof than seasonal lighting, for one specific reason: it eliminates the annual handling.** A seasonal install means someone is on your roof twice a year, every year - once in October and once in the spring, on shingles that have been through a full Minnesota winter. Permanent means one install, done, and nobody touches the roof again.

The fixture also lives in a channel mounted under the eave rather than as a strand clipped along the roof edge, which keeps it out of the drainage path by design instead of by care. On a roof with a history of ice dams, that is a meaningful difference.

To be clear: **permanent lighting does not prevent ice dams either.** Nothing you mount on the outside of a roof will. If you have a real ice dam problem, the answer is air sealing, attic insulation, and ventilation - talk to an insulation contractor. Lighting is a separate question. But between the two lighting options, permanent involves fewer hands on your roof over time.

What if I already have ice dams?

Deal with the attic. Air sealing and insulation are the actual fix, and they pay off in heating bills as well as in roof damage avoided. Roof rakes and heat cables manage symptoms; insulation addresses the cause.
